Colm Markey MEP has a vacancy for a Parliamentary Assistant (APA) specialising in policy & legislative affairs.

  • Position: Parliamentary Assistant (APA)

  • Location: Brussels, Belgium
  • Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience as per the mandated APA paygrades
  • Probation: 6 months

Key roles and responsibilities:

Legislative:

  • Follow the work of the AGRI, TRAN and PECH Committees
  • Draft amendments for files as appropriate.
  • Draft voting lists and explanations of votes during plenary sessions
  • Consult with key stakeholders and Irish Government officials on a regular basis
  • Liaise with relevant policy advisors and APAs on a regular basis
  • Provide briefing documents ahead of Committee contributions
  • Draft meeting requests and letters

Admin & Logistics:

  • Assisting with the running of the Brussels office
  • Planning, organising and managing events
  • Desk research support for reports, speeches, parliamentary questions / letters and constituent queries
  • Recruitment, management and training of trainees

The person:

  • Ability to digest and compress information into key talking points and expand on those as required
  • Ability to multitask and manage a number of items concurrently
  • Build strong working relationships with key stakeholders within the parliament / grouping and party
  • Strong political instinct to “see around the corners” and provide sound advice as to the impact of any and all decisions
  • Organised and fastidious, ensuring that all queries and questions are followed up on
  • Ability to work to strict & tight deadlines
  • Maintains absolute discretion in regards to their work
  • Adaptable to changing circumstances as the role requires
  • Happy to express their opinions when needed and is open to challenging and being challenged with a view to getting the best outcome
  • Willing to learn to close any gaps in knowledge which may arise during their role
  • A personable, team player who is willing to work for the betterment of the group

Essential:

  • Relevant third level qualification (eg. European law, Political Science, Public Policy, Agricultural Science etc.)
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • A minimum of two years post-qualification experience (full time) in a similar role in the EU or two years in governmental / national political office
  • National of an EU member state who lives/is willing to re-locate to Brussels, Belgium

Desirable:

  • Interest in Irish and EU politics
  • Knowledge of Irish and EU agricultural policy
